According to a proposal by California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the state will buy what item from public-spirited citizens?

Gasoline-powered lawnmowers. California is very much concerned about air pollution, to which gasoline-powered mowers contribute significantly. A single mower emits more pollutants than forty-three cars each year. It is estimated that retiring four thousand mowers would reduce air pollution by 20 tons per year, which is more than is generated by oil refineries in Los Angeles in just two days. One of the main pollutants spewed out by any gasoline engine is a family of compounds called aromatic hydrocarbons. These are known carcinogens. The amount of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons released in an hour of lawn mowing compares to that emitted by a car during a 90-mile (150-kilometre) trip. And whoever is pushing the mower is breathing in all these compounds. Fitting lawnmowers with catalytic converters would cut down on these emissions, as would switching to electric mowers. But the best idea is to use an old-fashioned push mower: no carcinogens and plenty of exercise!
